The Rundfunkbeitrag letter: pay, exempt, or object?

The broadcasting fee is charged per household, not per person and not per device. If you share a flat and someone already pays, you do not pay again. You just need their Beitragsnummer.

Students on BAföG, some benefit recipients, and people with specific disability markers can apply for exemption or a reduced rate with proof.

If you moved in mid-month or moved out of Germany, write to them with the exact dates. Retroactive corrections are normal and usually processed without argument.

Ignoring the letters is the expensive option: unpaid amounts are enforced administratively without going to court.

A short, factual letter fixes almost all of these cases. If yours is in German and you are not sure what it says, have it read before the deadline rather than after.
